In analogy to the situation of "calixarenes", the name "calixporphyrin" is meant to point to the rigid, biconcave frame of 1 and to indicate the potential ability to accommodate various guest molecules (see Gutsche, C. D. Calixarenes; The Royal Society of Chemistry: Cambridge, 1992). Differing from 1, in "calixarene-porphyrins" a calixarene moiety is bound covalently to the porphyrin (e.g. Nagasaki, T.; Fujishima, H.; Takeuchi, M.; Shinkai, S. J. Chem. Soc., Perkin Trans. 1 1995, 1883).
