    • The 2D dispersion relation of a single graphite plane can be linearized around the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone, in a similar way to the linearization procedure devised for one-dimensional systems. The two atoms in the unit cell give rise to a 2 times 2 Hamiltonian, which can be written as scrH = vF( σxkx+ σyky), where σx and σy are Pauli matrices. This is the Dirac equation in (2+1) dimensions [vF= 3ta/(2 hbar ), a being the C-C distance].
