    • note
    • Mubarak became more forthcoming in his support of the U.S. preparation to launch military action in Afghanistan following his visit to Paris and his meeting with President Jacques Chirac on September 24, 2001. Prior to that date, he was critical of both the notion of an international alliance against terrorism, arguing that it would be divisive, and of the use of massive military force against terrorist organizations. His statements were reported in Al-Ahram and Al-Hayat newspapers.
