Prospective cohort study of 15 patients with long bone fractures in whom reamed intramedullary nailing was performed. Highly echogenic material seen on transesophageal echocardiography during reaming corresponded with fat globules in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. However, the presence of fat alone did not correlate directly with development of fat embolism.
