The memory of our fathers
-
Boston: John Jewett and Co, I am grateful to Gordon Wood for pointing out the ironic outcome. The Catholics did not change the American Protestant emphasis in individual conscience. Instead, the conversion went the other way. The Catholic church in the United States became quite distinctly American; members inherited the tradition of active congregations and individual conscience. Catholicism stopped being a quasi-ascriptive trait (as it often is to those born Catholic in Europe). In the United States, Catholics took to measuring their Catholicism against their conpenchant for questioning church policy
