note
-
These maps show a series of nine dashed, unconnected lines, drawn in 1946 by the Republic of China around the South China Sea delineating the extent of China's 'historic waters.' The meaning of these lines has never been fully explained by either the Taiwanese or the Chinese mainland government. Neither government refers to them in official claims to islands in the South China Sea and no geographical co-ordinates have ever been given for their exact location or how they connect to each other.

While the Chinese and Russians have recently agreed on the second phase of the Su27 purchases involving another 100 or so fighters and licensing of further production in China, these will still not be enough to control the skies over the Spratlys.
