    • The generalized parity is most clearly elucidated if one considers the quantum dynamics on the direct product space, made up of the Hilbert space of square-integrable periodic functions in time and the ordinary Hilbert space of square-integrable functions in x.

    • A crude estimate of the intensity of light required to realize this effect in the ammonia molecule by maser irradiation (λ approx 2 mm) yields I approx 1013 W/m2. For an ac-driven rf SQUID (φx= φ0/ 2) with a capacitance of C = 10-13 F, an inductance of L = 10-7 H, and a critical current of Ic= 10-9 A, tunneling is destroyed at a driving frequency of ω = 108 Hz and injected current amplitude of 10-12 A. Likewise, coherent flux tunneling is destroyed if one applies a time-periodic external flux, φx= φ0/ 2 + δ φx sin ω t, where δ φx= 10-19 Wb.
