A very early reference was made by Michelle Perrot at a UNESCO meeting in 1984 of international experts: 'Theoretical Frameworks and Methodological Approaches to Studies on the Role of Women in History as Actors in Economic, Social, Political and Ideological Processes'. See M. Perrot, 'Making History: Women in France', in Retrieving Women's History: Changing Perceptions of the Role of Women in Politics and Society, ed. J. Kleinberg (Berg, Oxford, 1988), pp. 41-60.

There are also autobiographical books which build a collective memory through a variety of individual stories, such as L. The same is true for some feminist literary studies, where (auto)biography is discussed. One of the most important books showing this interaction is R. Ganier, Subjectivities: A History of Self-Representation in Britain, 1832-1920 (Oxford University Press, New York and Oxford, 1991). was also inspired by F. Lionnet, Autobiographical Voices: Race, Gender, Self-Portraiture (Cornell University Press, Ithaca and London, 1989). For an extensive review article, see L. Marcus, 'Border Crossings: Recent Feminist Auto/biographical Theory', in S. Leydesdorff et al., Gender and Memory, pp. 187-95.

Introduction

Luisa Passerini, Paul Thompson and I have also noticed this: 'It has been crucial to hear female voices, whether in politics or in women's groups, discussing present or past experiences. The rediscovery of female voices in history has affirmed the need for female voices now, and vice versa' (Leydesdorff et al., Introduction, in Gender and Memory, p. 6).

note
-
As he says in On Toleration (Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 1997), the way in which toleration is not only a principle but also a political practice has many consequences for everyday life and the ways we cope with cultural pluralism: 'Cultures and religions have marked themselves off by distinctive practices in these matters [he refers to family arrangements and gender roles] and then have criticised the practices of "others". But a virtually universal male domination sets limits to what could be argued about' (p. 60). This has given me a lot of ideas about framing my interviews in migrant communities.
