    • Bellesiles, Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture (New York, 2000), 349, notes briefly that "during the twenty years before the Civil War, Americans began constructing an image of themselves as a violent people and to act on that self-perception." That image contributed to "a shift toward ever-accelerating passion and violence" in the 1840s and 1850s. Bellesiles does not develop this idea, but it plays a crucial role, as does his claim about rising gun ownership, in his explanation for the surge in homicide among European Americans in the late 1840s and 1850s. Jones first sampled counties randomly, and then used all estates in each county, except apparently in two Massachusetts counties where she reduced her sample to about 100 estates by selecting estates randomly. She then weighed each estate according to age and other characteristics so that the sample would reflect the wealthholding population of the 13 colonies as a whole
