The total transverse momentum (p⊥) of the final state particles is then calculated relative to the 2 jet direction, and used to define a string. Monte Carlo events are generated to directly test this approach, and "various smearing effects" lead to the conclusion that "the method does work, though maybe not as well as one might have hoped"
