1. This tradition has its roots in the development-centered analyses carried out at ECLA (Economic Commission for Latin America, UN office in Chile), where Cardoso and Faletto worked on their book, Dependencia y desarrollo en America Latino (Cardoso and Faletto 1969). Touraine's contribution to the interpretation of Latin American reality was also very influential (for a synthetic view, see Touraine 1988).
2. The themes, interpretations, and open questions raised in Germani's book set the stage for some of the fundamental sociological questions that social researchers tackled since. The socioedemographic structure of the country and the process of class formation linked to processes of development (and underdevelopment), to the sharp ups and downs of the Argentine economy, are the core of Susana Torrado's book (1991) Estructura social de la Argentina: 1945-1983, a book that critically follows and updates the structural tradition in sociological analysis.
3. A few of the outstanding contributions are Torre 1983 and 1990; James 1990; Brennan 1996. A comparative perspective is found in Jelin 1974.
4. In his review of the interpretations of Peronism, De Ípola (1989) finds that the discontinuities in the theoretical frameworks used to understand and explain Peronism (political, sociological, ideological) do not match the historical continuities between Peronism and its historical antecedents
