    • note
    • McManus points out the potential for manipulation of the public agenda through information subsidies from sources powerful enough to hire press agents and to "manufacture" events. While subsidized news may facilitate the news organization's needs, its supplier may intend to manipulate the content in support of some objective.

    • Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley, The intercoder reliability coefficient was based on coding of 94 stories in the newscasts from broadcasts on six different stations from different markets. Three were compared early in the coding process and three were compared near the end of the coding. Intercoder reliability was checked by coding newscasts that were a part of the sample. The coefficient of reliability for geographic orientation was .79, for source of story was .84, and for topic was .84. Unresolved coding decisions were arbitrated by the senior researcher. The data were thoroughly examined after being entered in a computer database to spot inconsistencies. Every feasible step was taken to identify and rectify coding inconsistencies. For example, since coding of different stations' broadcasts was usually completed by different coding teams, we were able to compare coding decisions when stories were duplicated
