Effects of inhaled nitric oxide in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: Results of a randomized phase II trial
-
Dellinger RP, Zimmerman JL, Taylor RW, Straube RC, Hauser DL, Criner GJ, et al.: Effects of inhaled nitric oxide in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: results of a randomized phase II trial. Crit Care Med 1998, 26:15-23. First prospective, randomized, double-blind study of inhaled NO in ARDS published in the medical literature. This phase II study supported the lack of toxicity of inhaled NO in ARDS but did not show overall trends in clinical benefit. A post hoc analysis of the 5-ppm subgroup suggested clinical benefit.

Inhalation of nitric oxide in acute lung injury: Preliminary results of a European multicenter study
-
Lundin S, Mang H, Smithies M, Stenqvist O, Frostell C for the European Study Group of Inhaled Nitric Oxide: Inhalation of nitric oxide in acute lung injury: preliminary results of a European multicenter study [abstract]. Intensive Care Med 1997, 23(suppl 1):S2. This is a European open-label randomized trial of inhaled NO in ARDS that failed to show any evidence of clinical benefit. There was increased incidence of renal replacement therapy in the inhaled NO group. This trend has not been substantiated in the other two large clinical trials. Published thus far in abstract only.
