    • The Radio 4 morning news, Saturday 28 June 1997, and the Guardian of that day both trailed the 11 July sale at Christies (MSI 7741) of a 1935 sample of penicillin, lot 104, which was purchased by the Science Museum. The purchase, whose value was not great by London auction-house standards, was reported in the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian and in a nine-paragraph illustrated article in The Times, 12 July 1997. A sample auctioned by Sotheby's on 8 March 1996 was expected to reach a price of between £10,000 and £15,000 but fetched a bidding price of £20,000. Sotheby's Sale LN6140, lot no. 491.

It is widely believed that Britain lost, or gave up, the patents on penicillin to America and has since paid many millions of dollars to US drug companies for the antibiotic' (pp. 3-4).
