Modernization: Theories and facts
-
January which examines the relationship between GDP growth and regime change in 135 countries from 1950 to 1990.
-
Although much has been written on the political impact of individual economic crises, cross-regional studies remain relatively scarce. The most comprehensive comparative work to date is Adam Przeworski and Fernando Limongi's "Modernization: Theories and Facts" (World Politics, January 1997), which examines the relationship between GDP growth and regime change in 135 countries from 1950 to 1990. Przeworski and Limongi argue that economic turmoil threatens democracy, while Karen Remmer takes the opposite position in a series of articles that includes "The Sustainability of Political Democracy: Lessons from South America" (Comparative Political Studies, December 1996).

Detailed accounts of the interplay between economic and political forces in recent decades constitute a major focus of the anthology Democracy in Developing Countries (Boulder: Lynne Rienner, 1988), edited by Larry Diamond, Juan Linz, and Seymour Martin Lipset. For brief and updated accounts of the interaction between economics and politics, see Diamond and Marc Plattner, eds., Democracy in East Asia (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1998) as well as Jorge Domínguez and Abraham Lowenthal, eds., Constructing Democratic Governance: Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean in the 1990s (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1996). Even these impressive collections, however, are no substitute for reading in-depth modern histories of the countries in question. For concise political and economic histories of individual developing nations, readers should consult the Country Studies produced by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress.
