Semi-structured interviews were conducted by the author in October 1997 at the BBC News Centre, Bristol with 12 senior managers and newsroom journalists. A range of in-house BBC documents and publications were also consulted for senior BBC management statements and policy positions on the changing context of BBC news provision and the deployment of news technologies. Newsroom journalists were promised anonymity, and are referred to throughout this article by job title only. The article is also informed by Mark Ashton's professional knowledge of changing newsroom technologies across recent years.
