    • The expression of vesicular glutamate transporters defines two classes of excitatory synapse
    • This study reports the identification of a second type of vesicular glutamate transporter, VGLUT2 and demonstrates the complementary expression of VGLUT1 and VGLUT2. The distinct distribution patterns of these transporters suggest that they might define two classes of excitatory synapse.

    • Using fluorescent probe FMI-43 uptake and release during exocytosis and endocytosis as a tool, the authors demonstrated that when the strength of synaptic transmission is reduced during LTD, presynaptic terminals are capable of taking up FM dye, but incapable of releasing FM dye. They proposed that the reduction of synaptic transmission might be due to the alteration of kinetics of presynaptic transmitter release.
