This multicentric study defines (by drawing on the outcomes of 122 850 deliveries) the current role of ICUs and HDUs in the management of severely ill pregnant and postpartum women. It also concludes that SAPS and APACHE scores tend to overestimate mortality rates in these women, and recommends that illness scoring systems be modified to adjust for physiological changes in pregnancy.
