It is probably to Synge that should be given the credit for stressing the concept of observer, by the emphasis on the "world function" he has put in his treatise.(1) Even so, despite the statement made in Fermi's Collected Papers Editor's comment, true Fermi coordinates(9) deserve only a footnote mention (p. 84). Cosmologists made large use of fundamental observers.(10) Hawking and Ellis(11) discuss "timelike curves" in detail, but have no use for the Principle, implicit in the supposed geometrical framework.

The vanishing of the Levi-Civita connection at a point, a standard geometrical result,(13) is found in most classical texts on general relativity.(14) The construction of a coordinate system in which the Levi-Civita connection vanishes along a curve is due to Fermi.(15) Recently Iliev(16) has extended it to general derivatives, furthermore in the presence of torsion.
