The β-catenin/TCF-4 complex imposes a crypt progenitor phenotype on colorectal cancer cells

APOPTOSIS Programmed cell death. A genetic mechanism leading to induced cell death that involves activation of a cascade of genes. Apoptosis arises in normal tissue and can be associated with particular disease states. β CATENIN Multifunctional regulator of cell adhesion and gene expression by the TCF-family of transcription factors. Mutations in β catenin that increase the stability of the protein have been associated with colorectal cancer. CASPASE3 Enzyme involved in apoptotsis that when activated cleaves various cellular substrates causing cell death. DOMINANT NEGATIVE MUTANT, A gene carrying a mutation that when overexpressed interferes with the function of the endogenous protein. PROMOTER A discrete region in a gene controlling its faithful and regulated transcription into a single strand RNA molecule. T-CELL FACTOR (TCF) Family of transcription factors controlling gene expression in the embryonic intestine.
