The term 'knowledge sharing' is used to reflect the continuous, multi-directional nature of knowledge flow between a group of factories, while the term 'knowledge transfer' is used when the source and recipient involved are known.

Note that the different authors categorise the mechanisms differently. For instance, de Meyer [22] grouped temporary assignments and constant travel into 'Socialisation'. Here we have adopted Chiesa and Manzini's categorization [23] as a basis for comparison with De Meyer [22] and Almeida and Grant [24], with the addition of category 'rules, procedures reports, manuals' which appear in both De Meyer and Almeida and Grant.

note
-
This categorisation is based on the data collected during the interviews. Many companies were upgrading and changing IT systems. For instance, Gamma was migrating groupware-based system (Lotus Notes) to the intranet because of the latter's flexibility and lower cost. Also, the categorisation is based on the companies studied, i.e. the subsidiaries of the MNCs. Obviously the popularity and availability of ICT tools in their Western operations would be higher than these Malaysian and Singaporean operations.

note

The exact degree of reach and richness of mechanisms is difficult to determine, as different companies may use the mechanisms in different ways. In addition, within each mechanism, different communication channels can be used that determine the degree of reach and richness of mechanisms. Here, the relative degree of reach and richness of these mechanisms were determined using a method shown in Appendix 1.
