5. Split-step and pseudo-spectral methods have been also used to study multi-longitudinal-mode dynamics in lasers [see D. Casini, G. D'Alessandro, and A. However, these methods are more efficient than those considered in this paper only when the number of active modes is very large.
6. This is true for a free-running laser. The situation is different for lasers with injected signal or optical bistability. In these cases, the additional condition of small single-pass gain is also necessary.
