The identity of the supramolecular complexes 3 and 4 has been confirmed by combustion analysis and mass spectroscopic data. Combustion analysis establishes an Re/ligand ratio of 1:1, disproving the presence of metal or ligand terminated oligomers. Predominant peaks in the mass spectroscopic data correspond to tetramers, while peaks of higher and lower weight species are not observed. Additionally, square 3 has been characterized by pulsed-field gradient NMR spectroscopy (PFG NMR), a technique recently employed to establish the identity of supramolecular squares (vs. ligands and oligomers) by determining the diffusion coeffiecent of the species present: W. Unfortunately, the low solubility of the assembly (< 10 μM) precluded corroborative characterization by NMR spectroscopy.

Control experiments using large excesses of pyridine or 4-phenylpyridine in place of 2 had no effect upon the emission yield of the square.

note
-
Replacement of 2 by a 5,15-bis(4-ethynylpyridyl)porphyrin, for which no spectral overlap with 4 is observed, yielded no detectable guest-to-host energy transfer.
