    • Mesogens with a [i]benzothieno[3,2-b][i]benzothiophene core (ref 13) can also be regarded as nearly rodlike, but their mesophases are optically uniaxial, having quite distinct diffraction pattern, and in these mesophases the molecules are organized in statistically distributed blocks of molecular pairs.
