Tomita K, Kawahara N, Kobayashi T, et al.: Surgical strategy for spinal metas tases. Spine 2001, 26:298-306. Prognostic factors were evaluated in a retrospective series of 67 patients with spinal metastases. A scoring system was designed based on the grade of malignancy, and the presence of visceral or extraspinal bony metastases. In the second prospective phase of the study, 61 patients were treated according to these guidelines.

Spinal radiation before surgical decompression adversely affects outcomes of surgery for symptomatic metastatic spinal cord compression
-
Ghogawala Z, Mansfield FL, Borges LF: Spinal radiation before surgical decompression adversely affects outcomes of surgery for symptomatic metastatic spinal cord compression. Spine 2001, 26:818-824. A retrospective review of 85 patients, with patients analyzed according to three treatment groups: (1) radiation only, (2) radiation followed by surgery, and (3) de novo surgery followed by radiation. Patients treated with initial surgery had not only lower wound complication rates, but superior functional outcomes.

Phase I efficacy study of kyphoplasty in the treatment of symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures. Although this study did not include patients with metastatic disease, there were six patients with multiple myeloma bone.
