    • What is measured in the apparatus is the loss per unit length in the direction of the ac field, which is parallel to the tape face and perpendicular to the rolling or filament direction. Here, for convenience for device design, the loss is expressed per unit length along the rolling direction of the tape. This is done by the following calculation: (loss per unit length in ac field direction)×(tape width in ac field direction)/(tape length in the rollingdirection)=(loss per unit length along the rolling direction). The loss can also be expressed per unit volume of superconductor by dividing the above by the cross-sectional area of the superconducting cores (A=3.5×10−3cm2)
