Since they are not eigenstates of the total spin, the contribution of first order in the Coulomb interaction but zeroth order in the spin-orbit interaction should be taken into account. These have generally been neglected. This contribution could be important since the Coulomb interaction is much stronger than the spin-orbit interactions.
