43. x-tensor axis of thiyl radicals is parallel to the C-S bond direction and corresponds in powder spectra to g∥ (see Fig. 6); g⊥ is in the y-z plane perpendicular to the x-axis.
44. After UV irradiation at 10 K of cysteine in aqueous solution, a doublet of 50.2 mT splitting has been observed at 10 K (Fig. 1A), which was assigned to trapped H atoms which are stable in this matrix up to 40 K.
45. 3 bond (data not shown). We suppose, however, that the characteristic EPR spectra of protein-based thiyl radicals reported here are the same in both cases (see ref. 11).
