18. 2 system, in 1955 the first useful propylene oxidation catalyst was developed. The system works either in a cyclic oxidant process mode but also as a genuine redox catalyst. The first attempt to use it in a cyclic oxidant mode was abandoned after pilot planting it, because about 200 kg of the solid catalyst had to be circulated to produce 1 kg of acrolein. The expense was too high. Fortunately, the same system operates successfully as a redox catalyst and was first commercialized for the production of acrolein from propylene in 1957 (Degussa licensee), and subsequently commercialized internally in 1959 for the production of acrylonitrile from propylene in 1959 (licensed world wide).
