    • 2O were dissolved in 98.8 g of ethylene glycol at room temperature, followed by addition of 76.4 g of anhydrous citric acid and 102.0 g of methanol. The mixture was then stirred at 403 K until a transparent gel was formed. The polymer was then carbonized at 623 K and calcined in air at 923 K for 2 h to remove carbon.

    • N is Avogadro's number. The amount of surface nitrogen species was determined by XPS to be 8.0 μmol. Using the surface atomic ratio (O/N = 2.26:0.71) obtained by the peak intensities of La 3d, Ti 2p, O 1s, and N 1s in the XPS spectrum gives a value of 8.0 μmol of nitrogen species.
