    • Photomerocyanine is a colored form of spiropyran. In the literature, the term "photomerocyanine" is used interchangeably with "merocyanine" to emphasize that the metastable merocyanine form is a product of light irradiation.

    • Generally there are two factors responsible for spectral changes of monomer absorption: the solvent effect and/or intermolecular interactions of chromophores due to the formation of a dimer or higher aggregates. In the solid state, the same vibronic transitions may be allowed or forbidden depending on the cell symmetry. Thus, the red shift could be interpreted as the allowed vibronic transition. However, we ascribed the appearance of a new absorption band to J-aggregates, i.e., associates with interacting transition moments and arranged in a parallel way because the width and the intensity of the "red-shifted band" depends on a degree of structural ordering within the aggregates. This effect is better demonstrated for the long-chain analogue of 1 [ref 13].
