    • (b) White, E. H. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1955, 77, 6008-6010. N-Nitrosation of amides may occur via two pathways. The first mechanism includes a direct attack by the lone pair of electrons of the amide nitrogen on the nitrosating agent. Subsequent deprotonation of the resulting ammonium ion yields the corresponding N-nitrosoamide. This mechanism is somewhat questionable, because the nonbonding pair of electrons on the amide nitrogen is delocalized over the N-C-O system. In addition, the N-protonated nitrosoamide intermediate is a high-energy species because the positive charge on the nitrogen is adjacent to both a carbonyl and a nitrosyl group, possessing significant positive dipoles. The more likely mechanism involves attack by the carbonyl oxygen on the nitrosating agent to generate the O-nitroso species. Rapid deprotonation, rotation around the C-O bond and inversion through the nitrogen derives the intermediate, in which both the nitrogen lone pair and the NO group are properly oriented for the isomerization to the N-nitrosoamide.
