    • The applied field removes the degeneracy of the two states related by a mutual spin flip of the local-moment spin and a conduction-electron spin at the Fermi energy by giving a Zeeman splitting of the local moment. With no applied field but a nonequilibrium spin polarization, the two orientations of the local moment have the same energy, but the flip of a conduction electron from the chemical potential in one subband to that in the other requires an energy and similarly removes the degeneracy of the two states related by the mutual spin flip.
