B 56, 6620 (1997); the Bi lattice can be visualized by a twofold distortion of the Bi lattice can be visualized by a twofold distortion of two interpenetrating fcc lattices that form a simple cubic lattice. One distortion is a shear of the lattice in the [111] direction (trigonal axis) and the other is a displacement of one fcc lattice with respect to the other along the same axis. The result is a bilayer structure parallel to the (111) plane which has been discussed in the context of a Jones-Peierls mechanism featuring a metal-semimental transition. Keeping in mind that the (111) surface of Bi does not reconstruct, it is the same as that of an fcc lattice.
