Generally, two somewhat different and complimentary approaches for the self-assembly of discrete macrocyclic systems have been developed. One is a symmetry interaction model, which takes advantage of multibranched chelating ligands with highly coordinating naked metal ions resulting in the formation of neutral or positively charged macrocycles. The other is the molecular library model, which utilizes rigid, highly directional multibranched monodentate ligands with partially coordinatively unsaturated transition metal complexes engaged in dative bond interactions.
