    • The use of other cyclohexanedione derivatives incorporationg an asymmetric 1,2-diol unit as protecting group of one of the carbonyl groups has also been studied, leading to the formation of optically active precursors of agarofuran sesquiterpenes; results in that field will be reported in due time.

    • X-ray diffraction data. Structures were solved and refined using the SHELX97 package. They were refined with anisotropic thermal parameters for non-hydrogen atoms. Hydrogens were kept isotropic with a U factor riding on the bonded atom. Data were deposited as cif files with the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Center (CCDC) 12, Union Road, CB2 1EZ, Cambridge, UK. They are also available upon request to T. P. at prange@lure.u-psud.fr
