Canadian Cardiovascular Society consensus conference 2001 update: Recommendations for the management of adults with congenital heart disease
-
Therrien J, Dore A, Gersony W, et al. Canadian Cardiovascular Society consensus conference 2001 update: recommendations for the management of adults with congenital heart disease. Can J Cardiol 2001;17:940-59, 1029-50, 1135-58. This set of guidelines for major adult CHD lesions is the only publication of its kind. Its membership was international, and key US and European heart groups have adopted the recommendations.

Complications of coarctation repair
-
Serfontein SJ, Kron IL. Complications of coarctation repair. Semin Thorac Cardiovasc Surg Pediatr Card Surg Annu 2002;5:206-11. Coarctation repair is often thought of as "curative". This manuscript reminds the reader why that assumption is incorrect, and that the identification of known complications may lead to the saving of a life, or to treatment that improves outcomes.

Right ventricular volumes and ejection fraction with fast cine MR imaging in breath-hold technique: Applicability, normal values from 52 volunteers, and evaluation of 325 adult cardiac patients
-
Rominger MB, Bachmann GF, Pabst W, et al. Right ventricular volumes and ejection fraction with fast cine MR imaging in breath-hold technique: applicability, normal values from 52 volunteers, and evaluation of 325 adult cardiac patients. J Magn Reson Imaging 1999;10:908-18. The whole issue of how best to evaluate the right ventricle is confronted in this paper. Although "old technology" was used, MRI is the best way to do this, much better as a rule than does echocardiography.

Risk factors for arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death late after repair of tetralogy of Fallot: A multicentre study
-
Gatzoulis MA, Balaji S, Webber SA, et al. Risk factors for arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death late after repair of tetralogy of Fallot: a multicentre study. Lancet 2000;356:975-81. This multicentre study confirms the hypothesis that, in a repaired tetralogy patient, a QRS duration ≥ 180 ms is associated with the occurrence of sudden death and sustained ventricular tachycardia.

Location of acutely successful radiofrequency catheter ablation of intra-atrial reentrant tachycardia in patients with congenital heart disease
-
Collins K, Love B, Walsh E, et al. Location of acutely successful radiofrequency catheter ablation of intra-atrial reentrant tachycardia in patients with congenital heart disease. Am J Cardiol 2000;86:969-74. The development of invasive electrophysiologic treatment options for adult CHD patients is extremely important. Many forms of adult CHD may be complicated in adult life by atrial more than ventricular arrhythmias. In the post-CAST era, non-pharmacologic methods hold great promise, especially in this young patient population.
