Impaired olfactory identification in relatives of patients with familial schizophrenia
-
Kopala LC, Good KP, Morrison K, et al. Impaired olfactory identification in relatives of patients with familial schizophrenia. Am J Psychiatry 2001; 158:1286-1290. This is the first study to assess olfactory identification performance in members (psychotic and nonpsychotic) of families with familial schizophrenia (also see Good et al. [12]). Furthermore, this study also included measurements of detection thresholds. Because detection thresholds did not differ between groups, results suggest that the observed identification deficits in members of families with familial schizophrenia at least may not be due to a general inadequate sensory input, reduced sensitivity respectively.

Olfactory dysfunction in schizophrenia and temporal lobe epilepsy
-
Kohler CG, Moberg PJ, Gur RE, et al. Olfactory dysfunction in schizophrenia and temporal lobe epilepsy. Neuropsychiatry Neuropsychol Behav Neurol 2001; 14:83-88. This report, for the first time, compared unirhinally assessed identification and detection threshold performance between schizophrenia patients, and patients suggested to share temporolimbic brain dysfunction (patients with left and right TLE). Furthermore, it provides findings of intact sensitivity in schizophrenia patients by comparing detection thresholds between groups, including a healthy control group.

Unirhinal olfactory identification deficits in young male patients with schizophrenia and related disorders: Association with impaired memory function
-
Good KP, Martzke JS, Milliken HI, et al. Unirhinal olfactory identification deficits in young male patients with schizophrenia and related disorders: association with impaired memory function. Schizophr Res 2002; 56:211-223. During the past few years Good coworkers (see also Good et al. [15]) developed a new classification scheme employing unirhinal UPSIT identification scores. This is the first study assessing olfactory performance unirhinally in combination with several neuropsychological measures assumed to be sensitive to lateralized brain lesions. The report also increases one's awareness of possible associations between impairments in olfactory identification performance and cognitive functioning.

Odor identification, eye tracking and deficit syndrome schizophrenia
-
Malaspina D, Coleman E, Goetz RR, et al. Odor identification, eye tracking and deficit syndrome schizophrenia. Biol Psychiatry 2002; 51:809-815. The investigators studied olfactory identification performance in schizophrenia patients with DS, which is suggested to define a homogenous subgroup with persistent trait-like features. The authors point to several associations between key features reflecting impairments in social affiliation and olfaction.

Ratings of different olfactory judgements in schizophrenia
-
Hudry J, Saoud M, d'Amato Th, et al. Ratings of different olfactory judgements in schizophrenia. Chem Senses 2002; 27:407-416. This study introduces an innovative avenue to assess olfactory functioning in schizophrenia by comprehensively investigating different odor judgements. Based on their findings and referring to previous data from functional neuroimaging studies (see also Royet et al. [29]), the authors' discussion provides stimulating suggestions for future studies.
