Turnover of transmitter and synaptic vesicles at the frog neuromuscular junction
-
Ceccarelli, B., Hurlbut, W. P. & Mauro, A. Turnover of transmitter and synaptic vesicles at the frog neuromuscular junction. J. Cell Biol. 57, 499-524 (1973). References 7 and 8 are pioneering studies that investigated the mode of retrieval of synaptic vesicles at the frog nerve-muscle synapse. The authors interpreted their data in different ways opening up the kiss-or-collapse debate. Now, nearly 30 years later, we are quite sure that both were right.

Rapid reuse of readily releasable pool vesicles at hippocampal synapses

Pyle, J. L., Kavalall, E. T., Piedras-Renteria, E. S. & Tsien, R. W. Rapid reuse of readily releasable pool vesicles at hippocampal synapses. Neuron 28, 221-231 (2000). On the basis of the techniques developed in reference 28, these authors showed that a fraction of SVs is almost instantly ready for reuse after a first round of neurotranmitter release in hippocampal synapses, which indicates a kiss-and-stay-like mode of recycling.
