    • A sharp distinction must be made between the numerical calculation of tunnel splittings, and the calculation of energy eigenvalues. Using general numerical routines, a splitting can only be found as the difference of two energies. When the splitting is close to or smaller than the machine accuracy, numerical methods will fail. The limit J ≤ 20 arises from this consideration; adequate approximations to the energies themselves can of course be calculated for far greater J.
