In this study, the incidence and severity of childhood sexual abuse but not physical abuse predicted adult suicidal behavior independent of other risk factors. The odds of a sexually abused patient attempting suicide was more than 10 times that of a patient who had not been sexually abused. In sexually abused borderline patients the risk of suicidal behavior was additionally increased by antisocial features, hopelessness, and co-morbid depression.

Patients were divided by contingency as described in the text of this article. The only completed suicides occurred among the non-contingent patients.
