Psychological sequelae of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City
-
Galea S, Ahern J, Resnick H, et al. Psychological sequelae of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City. N Engl J Med 2002; 346:982-987. This study assessed the prevalence and correlates of acute post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among residents of Manhattan 5-8 weeks after the attacks of September 11. Among 1008 adults interviewed, 7.5% reported symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of current PTSD related to the attacks, and 9.7% reported symptoms consistent with current depression (with 'current' defined as occurring within the previous 30 days).

The stressor criterion in DSM-IV posttraumatic stress disorder: An empirical investigation

Breslau N, Kessler RC. The stressor criterion in DSM-IV posttraumatic stress disorder: an empirical investigation. Biol Psychiatry 2001; 50:699-704. The implications of the enlarged definition of the stressor criteria in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV was tested in an epidemiological sample and increased the total number of events that can be used to diagnose PTSD by 59%. Events that did not involve A2 rarely resulted in PTSD. However utility of A2 as a screen must be tested prospectively.

-
Neria Y, Bromet E, Sievers S, et al. Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder in psychosis: findings from a first-admission cohort. J Consult Clin Psychol 2002; 70:246-251. This study demonstrated a prevalence of PTSD of 14.3% in a first admission group of patients with psychosis and 26.5% in those with trauma exposure. Magnitude and duration of cardiovascular responses to anger in Vietnam veterans with and without posttraumatic stress disorder
-
Beckham J, Vrana S, Barefoot J, et al. Magnitude and duration of cardiovascular responses to anger in Vietnam veterans with and without posttraumatic stress disorder. J Consult Clin Psychol 2002; 70:228-234. This study found that PTSD veterans took less time to feel anger, had greater mean heart rate and diastolic blood pressure response during relived anger, and reported greater anger and anxiety during the task. These findings highlight the greater reactivity of PTSD subjects.

Superior temporal gyrus volumes in maltreated children and adolescents with PTSD
-
De Bellis MD, Keshavan MS, Frustaci K, et al. Superior temporal gyrus volumes in maltreated children and adolescents with PTSD. Biol Psychiatry 2002; 51:544-552. Volumetric analysis of the superior temporal gyrus grey matter volumes found these were larger in maltreated subjects with PTSD than in control subjects, whereas STG white matter volumes were smaller in maltreated subjects with PTSD than in control subjects, indicating the possibility of how childhood adversity changes brain function.

Abnormal functional connectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder
-
Shaw M, Strother S, McFarlane AC, et al. Abnormal functional connectivity in posttraumatic stress disorder. Neuroimage 2002; 15:661-674. This study examined the functional connectivity that may be associated with working memory difficulties in PTSD and demonstrated a pattern of increased and decreased connectivity between various regions. These data support findings indicating abnormal neural networks in PTSD.

Shin LM, Whalen PJ, Pitman RK, et al. An fMRl study of anterior cingulate function in posttraumatic stress disorder. Biol Psychiatry 2001; 50:932-942. Davidson JR, Landerman LR, Farfel GM, Clary CM. Characterizing the effects of sertraline in post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychol Med 2002; 32:661-670. The early response of irritability to sertraline is explored in this study that partly explained the effectiveness on other symptoms. This medication also had stronger effects on the psychological rather than somatic symptoms of PTSD.
