    • Effect of traces of polyvalent cations on σ has been recently discussed (ref 18). We think that the concentration of these ions, if present, should be a minimum, because of the procedure used to purify the surfactant (solvent extraction followed by several flash chromatography columns) and the high quality of water employed. This conclusion is corroborated by the fact that we have obtained very similar for (structurally similar) cationic aminoglucose surfactants (ref 15) (unpublished results). Therefore, the (possible) effect of polyvalent ions on σ either is negligible or is constant for anionic and cationic surfactants; the latter possibility is less likely.
