    • -1 peak. For vertical chains its transition moment is at 35° from the surface normal, which is close to the angle of 39° at which the PM-IRRAS signal vanishes. Another argument for neglecting this contribution is given by the absence of signal when the trimethoxysilane headgroups are converted into trihydroxysilane headgroups by hydrolysis (see curves b and c in Figure 5 of the next paragraph).
