    • Further qualitative and supporting confirmation of these data came from the ninhydrin test. Evidence for the re-formation of the primary amine, cystamine, upon hydration of the remaining imines on the surface, was obtained with the ninhydrin test, which stains for primary amines selectively, though there is limited reactivity with secondary amines. Solutions of 5% ninhydrin in alcohol, 8 g of phenol in 2 mL of ethanol, and 2 mL of a 0.001 M aqueous solution of potassium cyanide diluted to 100 mL with pyridine were prepared. These were then added together with the reagent wafer and heated to 120 °C for a few minutes. A noticeable difference in coloration in the test solution was consistent with the presence of primary amines, which, in combination with the other data presented, support the anticipated completion of the intended reduction on the surface.
