τ, from the polarization studies, were found to be fairly insensitive to changes in the solution.) The dimer structure could vary with solution composition or higher aggregates could be formed. These processes would be accompanied by a larger variation in the polarization dependence than we observe. The formation of large aggregates appears to be more prevalent for J-aggregates, such as those for cyanine dyes (Spano; Mukamel. Phys. Rev. A 1989, 40, 5783-5801.

The cationic dyes can have several charge states; it is unlikely that the charge is altered at the surface on the basis of the large spectral shifts measured by Gvishi, Reisfeld, and Eisen (Chem. Phys. Lett. 1989, 161, 455-460) for the neutral and dicationic forms of Nile blue.

note
-
Note that for the studies carried out for dyes on silica, the substrates are not very polar so that it is relatively easy for intermolecular interactions to raise the polarity. The polarity of water is certainly higher, and although at the interface it is lower than bulk water, it is probably more difficult to raise the medium polarity at the water surface through adsorbate interactions than it is on silica.
