To confirm this point we also synthesized derivatives that bear arylamino-substituents in 2- and 6-positions as well as alkyl and aryl groups at the imide-nitrogen atom. Whereas the latter variation had little influence on the optical properties, a detrimental effect on brilliancy and fluorescence was observed for aryl groups at 2- and 6-electron donor substituents, see: C. Thalacker, Ph. D. Thesis, Universität Ulm, 2001.

For 1.6,7.12-tetraphenoxy-substituted perylene bisimide dyes substituted with oligoethyleneglycole chains at the four phenoxy arms, solubility in ethanol and water/ethanol mixtures has been achieved and a significant reduction of the fluorescence quantum yields has been observed owing to the protic environment: P. Osswald, R. Dobrawa, F. Würthner, unpublished results.
