    • Poly(4-vinylpyridine) was quaternized by methyl iodide in sulfolane under an argon atmosphere to form poly(N-methyl-4-vinylpyridinium iodide). Because iodide may quench pyrene fluorescence, the iodide was exchanged to chloride as follows: the iodide was exchanged to perchlorate by using silver perchlorate, and then the perchlorate was exchanged to chloride by dialysis against dilute hydrochloric acid (pH = 2.0) and by using an anion-exchange resin.
