    • The statistical measure appropriate for a discovery claim is the probability that a background fluctuation can account for all events in the signal region. This is different from the yield significance, which goes as S/ √S + B, e.g., the area of a Guassian fit. Applying a yield significance test to a discovery claim would require ≥ 25 signal events in a background free situation in order to claim a 5σ limit.
