The stereochemical outcome of this reaction was verified by reaction of the epoxide of 7 with lithium aluminum hydride to form the methyl carbinol and comparison to the product resulting from addition of methyl magnesium bromide to the ketone 6. The stereochemical outcome of the latter reaction was demonstrated through a single crystal X-ray structure, the details of which will be published in due course (manuscript in preparation).
